Peter George Hobden Avis 1921 - 2014

Peter was born in Catford, London, and celebrated his 92nd Birthday in July among many of his family, including most of his great-grandchildren, two of whom he had not met before. Following a further celebration among friends, Peter became unwell, and for several weeks was a patient at Southwold Hospital. Peter died peacefully in St Barnabas, Southwold, after spending Advent and Christmas there with members of his family.

Peter and Joan arrived from Essex soon after his retirement from the Midland Bank, where he had worked his way from messenger to Assistant General Manager. It was in the Bank that he and Joan spied each other and soon fell in love. They were married for 68 years. Their 3 children, Paul, Elizabeth and Richard provided them with 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Following Joan’s death in 2010, Peter continued his commitment to St Andrew’s, WATS and other village activities. Peter very much appreciated the kindness and friendship of his neighbours and continued to look after ‘Nightingales’ and found company with Jessica, the poodle, whom he managed to care for until April, when he was pleased to know she would be in the safe care of one of his grandchildren and had become a Scottish dog.

Peter was a true gentleman, warm-hearted and thoughtful, and will be sadly missed by his neighbours and friends in Walberswick. Among many other good things, Peter’s many years of work as Church Warden, Treasurer, Covenant Secretary, Eucharistic Minister, reader, intercessor and encourager will be remembered.
