This week the village bade farewell to George and Izzy and welcomed new owner Andrew Storer. George and Izzy set up the deli in May 2013 and made it such an important part of Walberswick in such a short space of time that it will be sad to see them go, but what a wonderful opportunity this will be for a young talented chef like Andrew.
Andrew moved back to suffolk just over two years ago with wife Stefania and two daughters Francesca and Siena. He'd previously lived in London for 20 years having moved there when he completed his training as a chef at 17. During those 20 years he worked under the likes of Albert Roux & David Cavalier and was head chef at The Irish club, Goldman's Sachs investment bank and The Naval Military Club Piccadilly. Andrew has a real passion for food and told us he has always dreamed of owning a deli.
"The idea started about 6 years ago when we looked at a deli in Norfolk, a few years went by and then we moved back from London, but to find a deli right here in Walberswick is a real dream come true. I believe in fate, but since moving home something has drawn my family to this area and things just slotted into place; our jobs, finding our house four doors down from the school where my wife works, and finally the missing piece - our deli! It's great to be back in Walberswick and cooking for you all. I really hope I can continue the great work Izzy & George have done and help add a little something to the wonderful uniqueness of Walberswick".
We certainly wish him all the best, as well as George and Izzy, as they take off on their travels again. A casual observer might not notice the difference, the very high standards they set will certainly be maintaned, and as Andrew says, he will add his own spin, as will his family. There has already been evidence of the younger members of the family mucking in, helping to pick the fruit for the Blackberry Bakewell tart, although apparently there should have been a few more berries in the tart and less in the gilrs' tummies!
