TOWN & ROBINSONS MARSHES
The Environment Agency will be commencing work to strengthen the flood embankment adjoining Town Marshes and Robinsons Marshes in the week commencing 3 August.
This is Phase I of a two phase project. The first phase will strengthen the banks on the Charity’s land. The second phase, to commence in 2016, will strengthen the remaining bank up to the Bailey Bridge. Phase I should be completed within 10 to 15 weeks depending upon weather, which may take the project into late October.
Unfortunately, because the work requires good weather and needs to avoid damaging wildlife, it has to be carried out within peak holiday season. Also it will be necessary to temporarily divert the footpath which runs from the Ferry Hut, to alongside the river bank.
The Environment Agency have been extremely good to deal with. We would also like to acknowledge the tireless work of the Blyth Estuary Group and particularly Richard Steward, who have helped to bring this project to fruition. The end result should be greater resilience to catastrophic flooding and a reduction in the risk of damage to property, land and footpath access to the Village.
