On 8th March Erica Donnellan and Doris Brynley-Jones organised a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament on behalf of Walberswick W.I. The idea was to see the original building before it’s refurbishment.
The W.I. organise two or three outings every year and the arrangements were made through Suffolk Coastal MP Dr. Therese Coffey’s office, obtaining the Special Permit and security clearance. The group was reassured to know that security on entry was very strict, the same as airport security. Visitors who couldn’t be scanned where searched.
Therese Coffey met the group with two of her staff and the photograph was taken on the steps in Westminster Hall. The Tours Co-ordinator then took them around. They were unable to go into the Commons as Parliament was sitting (Budget day) but had a tour of the Lords and went to the Public Gallery where they heard some of the post Budget debate.
Following lunch in the cafe the group returned by coach to the village. Judging by the smiles on their faces a good time was had by all! The trip was open to all Walberswick residents.
