On Saturday 23rd of September a small crowd gathered on the village green to wave off two brave cyclists and their support crew. Richard and Gary were raring to go and suitably dressed in the obligatory lycra, complete with their team colours.
This is no ordinary gentle cycle ride, their aim is to travel from Walberswick to Lubrín in Almería, Spain in aid of the Jane Bayley Memorial Fund, set up by her family. The journey the cyclists have chosen is poignant as Jane (Cobbin) spent many years living and bringing up her family in Walberswick, on Millfield Road before moving to Lubrín.
Jane died unexpectedly of cancer just before Christmas 2016, and during her short stay in Torrecardenas Hospital, Almería, she often expressed a desire to be able to sit outside for a while. Unfortunately there is nowhere suitable at the hospital to do this. The initial aim of the fund is to raise money for the creation, and maintenance of a small garden at the hospital where patients, and their visitors may sit and relax for a while.
