We were all shocked and saddened to learn that Mary Nuttall was mugged, while unpacking her car, outside her home on The Street on June 10th. A 'short and stocky' girl walked up to Mary and hit her in the stomach. Mary reeled back against her car 'which stopped me falling, as I have two artificial knees!' The girl hit Mary on the cheek and kept asking for money but Mary insisted she didn't have any and fortunately, had just taken her handbag indoors. Snatching a carrier bag, the girl saw it only contained plants and threw it down, walking off with nothing. With great prescence of mind, Mary saw she was heading towards the Tuck Shop and phoned them, 'in case she hurt someone else.' The police came quickly and thankfully, Mary's spirit is undimmed. 'It's frightening and unexpected for that to happen here. I suppose we have to remember that from now on there will be many strangers in the village and some will be scruffy and dishevelled. But in my experience, they usually turn out to be charming birdwatchers!' Mary would like to thank everyone for the many cards and messages she received after her ordeal. 'I have truly been overwhelmed with kindness.'
