The Birdsong Walk began in 1984, and since then there has been considerable fluctuation in the species seen and heard, with the weather being the biggest influence. This year the conditions were a little cold for the time of year with a North Easterly wind, but this didn't impact the number of humans - there was an amazing turnout of 35 attendees. As has become the custom, the walk ended in style with a fine breakfast at the Anchor.
Matthew Denny reports "Two garden warblers were in good voice. The standout species was a great white egret, spotted flying over the reed bed from the bank by David Riches. Perhaps the finest birds were close views of two male bearded tits from the bank. Marsh harriers showed frequently and well"
Matthew asks that we all record bird sightings (particularly marsh harriers close to Manor and Track Fields) in iRecord at irecord.org.uk
Below is a list of the 54 birds seen or heard on Saturday May 18th, 2025. The photograph of the Bearded Reedling/Bearded Tit shown here was taken by a young photographer James Clark, known as beak_to_lens on Instagram, whose family lives in the village. There is more to come about this extremely talented young man!
