The Bailey Bridge, crossing the River Blyth and connecting Walberswick with Southwold, will be closed on Wednesday 2nd October for repairs. Last week, the County Council carried out a detailed inspection of the bridge and although news was initially promising, the survey has now been completed and the news is not so good.
Essentially, there is corrosion underneath the bridge deck and in one of the supporting piers and the recommendation is that the bridge should be closed to all traffic. SCC will be sorting out barriers and notices as soon as possible. The full extent of the repair work is not yet known but SCC should have a better idea by early next week when they will have had follow up information from the engineer. It is feared that the bridge will be closed for some months.
Further updates will be posted as they are recieved.
